This rifle was inspired by an antique John Bonewitz rifle that retains its original painted faux burl finish. This finish was reproduced and aged to look like the original. The decorative carving was done in the style of John Bonewitz and his apprentice Leonard Reedy of Wommelsdorf, PA circa 1790. The carving behind the cheek piece is a Brooks design using elements of Bonewitz and Reedy. This project was also a study in simulating an antique finish on iron, brass and wood. The brass patch box is an early pattern used by Bonewitz. The barrel is signed "John S. Brooks 2008".
